whats new and up to date

Its been a while since i posted something. I am so sorry for the long absence but to be honest this whole blog thing was our english teachers idea of an english project. Yes i know what are you thinking "lame" but in the end i learnt alot about the subject. Yeah you know what, I'm proud of the effort i made on the whole thing. I still remember it like it was yesterday. it was alot of hard work. Anyway its done with and I'm happy.

I nearly forgot to mention my current statues. Thank God i finished my higher diploma in chemical engineering. I scored a 3.6 GPA. Yeah i know its an achievement i am proud off. I'm continuing though with my bachelors. Thats doing ok. But one of my biggiest problems is math. the math teacher we have is a physo

Why Global Warming and Why now?

This blog basically is our college’s idea of an English level 2 project. I have no objections whatsoever but I am continually bored by the same subject every single day. Let me just get this out now ''we are going to die anyway so why bothe'' but unfortunately as I am a high flyer I have to do my best if I want to nail this project, even if it kills me which eventually it will. In this posting I will just briefly talk about Global Warming which is today’s everyday big issue, the end of the world.

Carbon emissions, pollution, ozone, ice melting, rise in temperature and rise in sea level; these phrases or words have become repetitively common to the human race these past few years with the birth of the millennium and the constant development of technology. With all the facts and figures that scientists bring, what have we to do? Sit back and enjoy the ride, for it will be a ride to remember, or wake up and feel the temperature rising and icebergs melting and do something about it. Our future is in our hands. What we do with it is entirely up to us. It is only a matter of time

What is Global Warming and why is the end here?

Global warming is like saying ''what is for lunch?'' It has become so common in our language that it has become a part of our everyday lives. What actually is global warming I asked myself the first time I heard it. I just never knew that it would have a huge impact on our lives, stalking us at every turn we make. Scientists believe that global warming is:-

#A gradual warming of the Earth's atmosphere reportedly caused by the burning of fossil fuels and industrial pollutants.

#The progressive gradual rise of the earth's surface temperature thought to be caused by the greenhouse effect and responsible for changes in global climate patterns. An increase in the near surface temperature of the Earth. Global warming has occurred in the distant past as the result of natural influences, but the term is most often used to refer to the warming predicted to occur as a result of increased emissions of greenhouse gases.

#Global warming is the gradual increase in global temperatures caused by the emission of gases that trap the sun's heat in the Earth's atmosphere. Gases that contribute to global warming include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxides, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and halocarbons (the replacements for CFCs). The carbon dioxide emissions are primarily caused by the use of fossil fuels for energy.

An increase of the earth's temperature by a few degrees resulting in an increase in the volume of water which contributes to sea-level rise. That all in all, is global warming in a nutshell, trapped by greenhouse gases.

Causes of Global Warming

Eventually with out stop, with industrialization global warming has finally come. There are many causes for this tragedy but the major ones are listed below:-

Carbon Dioxide from Power Plants
Carbon Dioxide Emitted from Cars
Carbon Dioxide from Trucks
Carbon Dioxide from Airplanes
Carbon Dioxide from Buildings
Nitrous oxide
Deforestation
City Gridlock
Carbon in Atmosphere and Ocean

One cause not mentioned above but might sound a bit strange is livestock.
I found this on a site; the article says “Cow 'emissions' more damaging to planet than CO2 from cars” that sounded obsurd in the beginning but, as I read it, it made a lot of sense. Below is the article that I read.

It said that livestock are responsible for 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming which is more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together.

It also said that burning fuel to produce fertilizer to grow feed, to produce meat and to transport it - and clearing vegetation for grazing - produces 9 per cent of all emissions of carbon dioxide, the most common greenhouse gas. And their wind and manure emit more than one third of emissions of another, methane, which warms the world 20 times faster than carbon dioxide.

Livestock also produces more than 100 other polluting gases, including more than two-thirds of the world's emissions of ammonia, one of the main causes of acid rain.

Effects of Global Warming

There are two major effects of global warming which are:

1) Increase of temperature on the earth by about 3° to 5° C (34° to 41° Fahrenheit) by the year 2100.
2) Rise of sea levels by at least 25 meters (82 feet) by the year 2100.

Increasing global temperatures are causing a broad range of changes. Sea levels are rising due to thermal expansion of the ocean, in addition to melting of land ice. Amounts and patterns of rainfall are changing. The total annual power of hurricanes has already increased markedly since 1975 because their average intensity and average duration have increased (in addition, there has been a high correlation of hurricane power with tropical sea-surface temperature).

Changes in temperature and precipitation patterns increase the frequency, duration, and intensity of other extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, heat waves, and tornadoes. Other effects of global warming include higher or lower agricultural yields, further glacial retreat, reduced summer stream flows, species extinctions. As a further effect of global warming, diseases like malaria are returning into areas where they have been extinguished earlier.

One effect not popularly mentioned is that as the weather gets unpredictable in response to rapid global warming, parasitism against caterpillars will decrease, biologists warn in a new study. This will free the caterpillars to devour agricultural fields and strip leafy forests bare.

"That's really of great concern, especially to agricultural systems where we rely on several of these parasites. They keep outbreaks from occurring," said Lee Dyer, a biologist at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

What is the uae doing about global warming?

After reading some articles on the UAE about global warming I can just say that I am honored that I am a UAE citizen. The UAE is very aware of the current situation. With global warming there are many problems but I'll just mention one and how the UAE are attending to it.

In an article I read it said that marine environmentalists say coral reefs in the Arabian Gulf are threatened by pollution, effluents (brine) from desalination facilities, slow degeneration of Gulf waters and global warming.
The coral bleaching episode, which decimated over 90 per cent of coral reefs in the near-shore areas of the UAE is blamed on global warming

Dolphin Energy Ltd, the World Wide Fund for Nature and Erwda are set to collaborate on a project to map the status and condition of coral reefs in the UAE and Qatar.

'Electrodeposition', also called Biorock, a technique developed in lab experiments over the last 30 years by Harvard expert Dr Tom Goreau with Prof Hilbertz, proves rapid coral reef restoration is possible using low-voltage electricity. The technique involves use of metal structures attached to the negative pole of a direct current source. The positively charged pole is attached to an anode. Both are then submerged in seawater.

With this technique the limestone forms at a rate of one inch per month with high mechanical strength, similar to natural coral growth, but accelerated by electricity.

With this we can see that the UAE are prepared for the challenging future coming ahead.

How can I change the world?

It is not like your trying to push a mountain but by changing your every day activities or actions, you contribute to global warming. For instances your room light, when you leave your room don’t forget to turn it off. In the UAE we don’t actually pay for electricity most of the time companies do. So we living in houses don’t realize that for every second we put the light on in our rooms we add misery to the world with pollution and the may cause and effects mentioned in posts above. So people try, it’s not too much. Myself I have changed a little on how I behave. For example, I have reduced the use of paper by using my laptop to type with instead of writing on paper. I have a program which acts like a binder where I can store all my files in, its like a note book actually, for each and every subject. I would like to conclude by saying that small changes may change the world where our future kids will live in. I hope we over come global warming and God save us all inshallah.

“Thank God its over"

The blog project about global warming took a lot out of me. I said this at the very beginning. Yes, I now have a different perspective of the subject. I am now conscious on the current situation that is the causes and effects of global warming but, there is always a “but” for me. I think this project was too much, for just 7% an awful lot was done that percentage equals to the portfolio mark. That’s not right. Anyway me and my classmates and especially my teacher enjoyed our self’s and it was great experience for a 6 week project.
I hope I get an A in this project its been a huge pain.
